Hounslow Heath Primary School, London
Outstanding Computing in a Large Primary
Hounslow Heath is a large primary school in the Greater London area. With two computing coordinators, the school sought to find a solution that could empower a large staff size, remain flexible enough to cater for inevitable changes within a large staff and to do so by giving the students as much agency over their own learning as possible.
The Challenge
Hounslow Heath had tried different approaches to creating an outstanding computing environment in the school, but with over 800 students and a staff size to match they needed something that would give the students ownership of their learning in order to deal with the ongoing challenges presented by a large school size - particularly in a subject that can be as challenging as computing.
The Solution
Focusing initially on building a strong foundation, building device skills among the students and then moving to more complex curriculum-focused apps in coding, digital literacy, online safety and I.T. (Google Workspace). Each teacher has found a balance between student-led learning and whole-class learning (using the Olus learning portal together on the whiteboard) that enables them to facilitate a teaching and learning environment that suits their personal teaching style.
The Results
The coordinators were able to build a strong foundation that has enabled them to rollout a self-differentiated, student-driven, teacher-supported learning programme. Computing at Hounslow Heath is flexible and dynamic for the teachers, and is able to deal with the ongoing changes and challenges at a large school like theirs.
Response from the School
“In a large school like ours it is imperative to provide a strong foundation upon which our teachers can facilitate the highest of standards for teaching and learning in the classroom - computing is especially important for us here at Hounslow Heath! As the coordinator, I need to know that our students are being challenged and our teachers are feeling confident with computing - Olus Education’s student and teacher portals do both of these for us, I couldn’t be happier with the results!”
Preti Malhotra, Computing Coordinator
“When the students are using the Olus Education portal, I feel freed up to provide more time with individuals and groups - providing invaluable differentiated support. Students are confident using the Chromebooks and iPads as learning tools, while achieving curriculum goals - this is exactly what I need”
Phil Harding, Year 6 Teacher
“Olus is really great fun and easy to use - it’s helped me be much more independent in my computing learning.”
Abdul, Year 5 Student
“Olus is really helpful because it teaches us how to use different apps step by step and we can always go back to something if we forget how to do it or get stuck.”
Preethishri, Year 3 Student
